NEW ORLEANS, LA - JANUARY 01: Raekwon Davis

Alabama football still has needs in the 2018 signing class. A new player could be added this weekend during a visit by DL, JUCO, Tevita Musika.

Alabama football needs more depth on the defensive line. If possible, an additional inside linebacker and maybe even another quarterback could benefit the Tide.

Scholarship numbers are not a problem for the 2018 class. The Tide can add more players within the annual limitation of 25 signees. Total scholarship numbers are tighter but Nick Saban always makes those numbers work. Between the end of spring practice and fall camp, a player or two will usually seek more playing time at another school.

The only 2018 option that could be decided this weekend is adding defensive line depth with JUCO, Tevita Musika. No doubt the Tide needs another big body in the defensive front. Musika is 6-feet-1 and 320 pounds. He has two seasons of eligibility left after his JUCO career. Musika is not expected to unseat Johnny Dwight or Phidarian Mathis but he could contribute with 12-16 snaps a game. That level of contribution would be similar to Josh Frazier last season.

Musika is being recruited by Tosh Lupoi and he already has an offer. Speaking about the possibility of signing with the Crimson Tide, Musika said,

You can’t really get better than Bama. They have the No. 1 weight room. I think if I read it right it said that their facilities are better than most professional facilities. It’s going to be hard not to commit.

It is unfair to compare Musika to Da’Ron Payne but his videos show good agility for his size. Of course, the videos are against offensive line competition not equal to SEC play. While the Tide needs depth in 2018, Musika has a redshirt option available to him in a three-year window to play two seasons.

Musika had one FBS offer coming out of high school from Hawaii.  He has a current offer from Kansas and Texas A&M has shown recent interest in him as well.

Musika is so under the national recruiting radar, his actual weight is in question. He has been reported at 300 pounds to 330 pounds. If 330 is a correct number, he may need some weight reduction before earning playing time in 2018.
